Tolerance vs Intolerance in INDIA
Amid the growing debate between Tolerance and Intolerance in INDIA, I
am beginning to think what exactly is the definition of tolerance and
secularism in INDIA. Every day I see someone or the other returning
their award protesting against the rising intolerance. Actors making
statements about moving to a different country. politicians talking
about fireworks in another country if they lose in elections. I am
wondering what is different now and why are these so called people
disturbed? What is Secularism then? I have always believed Secularism is
the right to be free from any religious rule or teaching and being
secular means you see everything and everyone as equal and you respect
each others religious sentiments. Secularism also means that you do not
impose your religious beliefs on anybody else. but based on my
observation and my experience, I think Secularism is only expected from a
few particular communities in INDIA. hold on.. why am I being religious
all of a sudden you may ask? I am religious but I am not a fanatic and
most importantly I am Secular.
Let's take a few examples.
Lets start with schools first. so the first thing our parents want to do is to put us in a good English school most of the times its a convent. I would say majority of my friends have done their education from a convent school. for those who have studied in such a school you may be aware that we have Prayers in the morning or atleast my friends from St. Francis might remember the 30 mins of prayers and carol singing daily while we were in school, we would pray to lord Jesus every single day and we would praise the lord. kids from all faiths saying the same prayer and praising the lord daily. This is why INDIA is TOLERANT. now imagine a HINDU or a MUSLIM opening a school and asking the kids to do Surya Namaskar or repeat verses from the Bhagwad Gita or Quran, all hell will break lose, parents will start complaining, media will go haywire to cover this. dont you agree? does a school ask you to follow one particular faith? does studying in one school where the management is from another faith change the way you gain knowledge or does it change the way you see god? well if its not the convents then it does in INDIA. atleast for certain sections. a Secular country like INDIA only can have something like this where majority of HINDU population want their kids to study in Convent Schools. this is why INDIA is TOLERANT.
Lets take the places of worship now. If you see a SIKH or a HINDU, they'll never ever hesitate to step foot in a Mosque or a Church. likewise if you expect people from other communities to step foot inside a temple they feel it is unholy as they think its against their faith, this is why they even hesitate to accept the prasad that we get in temples, even during our festivals you will see a lot of HINDUS or SIKHS wishing everybody on their festivals but I've never seen anybody from another community writing Happy Diwali messages on their Facebook wall or Happy Ganesh Chaturthi. but nobody makes a fuss out of it as we respect other faiths. because INDIA is TOLERANT.
Lets take our Festivals. each and every person or almost everybody likes celebrating festivals in INDIA. from Holi right upto Christmas, every festival is celebrated with the same enthuisiam by each and every community. you will see a Muslim celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi or a Christian celebrating Diwali, you will also see HINDUS keeping their visarjan procession quiet when they're crossing a street where our MUSLIM brothers are doing their namaaz during Ganesh Chaturthi. because INDIA is TOLERANT.
People who think the west is more Liberal and more tolerant should also see the number of their citizens fighting for ISIS, compare that with INDIA and you'll see that being the second most populous country for MUSLIMS, there are only a handful of radicals fighting for ISIS. if they're so tolerant then why do we have so many of their citizens getting radicalized and why don't you see the same in INDIA? it is because of the inclusiveness of our society, our values and most importantly our culture. it is because INDIA is TOLERANT.
I had a friend of mine who was from a minority community and had a HINDU boyfriend, the only reason her family was against her was because the guy was from the HINDU community and her family was worried that she might be converted but none of that happened and the girl and the boy are happily married and enjoying a happy life, the girl still follows her faith and the guy his. both of them respect each other and their respective faiths. take for example our Bollywood stars. you'd see many of them married to people from the minority and still following their religions without imposing their faith on their spouses, this is because INDIA is TOLERANT.
After having said all of this, I must say that I have grown up in a place where Christians and Muslims along with people from other religions organize and celebrate HINDU festivals and HINDUS organize IFTAAR parties for MUSLIMS and celebrate Christmas the same way they celebrate Diwali which is why I can proudly say INDIA is TOLERANT.
An irresponsible govt in power who tries to impose their ideologies will not go a long way, though they might be Nationalistic, but you build a country if you tag everyone along in the building process. To those in Power, I request you to learn from your mistakes and seriously think about developing the country rather than focusing on petty issues or else you might again witness the people's power, which is their vote. Janta Janardhan Hai. Ye Yaad Rakhiye.
People who return their Awards, People who speak about INTOLERANCE, people who speak about Conversion, people who speak about Ghar wapasi, people who speak about BANs, people who force their religious ideologies, people who preach hatred are all not well, they are sick. I request everyone to send them Bouquets, Flowers and Get Well Soon cards. these people desperately need it. In a secular Democracy, everyone has the right to speak, everyone has the right to protest. Instead of abusing them on social media or elsewhere, please send them Get Well Soon Cards which is the right way to protest. otherwise you're just proving their point. show them you're TOLERANT, show them INDIA is TOLERANT.
Be thankful for your country, be thankful for its rich culture, be thankful for its heritage, be thankful for its uniqueness, be thankful for its legacy. Be Proud to be an INDIAN.
Again I am not a Bhakt or an AAM Aadmi or a Pappu follower, I am just a Common Man (A Proud and a TOLERANT INDIAN) expressing his Common Views.
