Know your PM candidate : Miss Mamata Banerjee
Name : Mamata Promileswar Banerjee
State : West Bengal
Also famously known as : Didi
Famous Dialogues : BJP chor hai, I am putting you in Jail
Followers : Seculars
Opposers : Bhakts, Andh Bhakts, Pappus
Accomplishments : She is the first woman chief minister to hold office in West Bengal. Having seen many firsts in her career as a politician she's truly projected herself as a strong leader and a strong woman. Bengal being the communist party's fortress for more than 30 years witnessed her rise as they were defeated by a huge margin in the elections.
Miss Banerjee was also named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2012.
She started her political career at a very young age of 15 with the students wing of congress. She continued to work with Congress until 1997 when she left Congress and established the All INDIA Trinamool Congress. She has held several positions in the Central Government with the most prestigious being the Minister of Railways.
She is a good orator and an avid painter. Some of her paintings have been sold for crores (One painting was sold to Sudipto Sen who was involved in Saradha Scam).
Her political affiliation has been an on and off affair between the NDA and the UPA. She was part of the NDA before the Tehelka scam and then left and came back to the NDA leaving again for Congress.
In her tenure, Electricity has improved a lot. A big thumbs up for the government.
Roads and transportation has improved. Specially sub-urban and rural roads have been improved drastically.
She has started several schemes like the Kanyashree Prakalpa, Yuvashree (Yuva Utsaha Prakalpa), Sabooj Sathi, Fair Price Medicine Shops (kind of like Mohalla clinics), Kisan Mandis, Nirmal Bangla (kind of like Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan). Mamata Banerjee’s reign in West Bengal has seen a host of developments in the state, first with her claim to restoring peace in Jangalmahal with the ousting of extreme Left Wing militants. She is largely credited with the empowerment of women in the state, along with the beautification of Kolkata. She was named in the Forbes’ list of ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’ and also in Bloomberg Market’s list of ’50 Most Influential People in the World of Finance’.
Failures :
She has failed to control atrocities on a certain section of the people. (I would not name Hindus here because I don't want to be biased.). Mamata Banerjee has severely failed to maintain the inter-communal harmony. The recent Basirhat incidents serve as the fresh example for this. Communal riots has seen huge increase over the years. Simply because she is Pro-minority and she keeps no stone unturned to add burden to a certain section of the population. Simply to please the minority population.
She has driven away many industries and the state is industrially backward. Business houses are in wait and watch mode and investment flow into the state is suspect. Perception of West Bengal as an investment destination not good (These are the words of the French Ambassador)
A series of multi crore scams by her partymen like Sharada scam, Narada scam, Rosevalley scam have surfaced in the recent years.
Metro Projects are stuck indefinitely and even the Kolkata High Court is pulling all its hair out trying to convince the "authorities" to do something positive.
The government came to power by shutting down one of the premier projects of a leading Industrialist Group, the Tata Nano factory at Singur. This has somewhere caused an inexplicable disadvantage for the government to call forth such projects. She has failed to create jobs (mostly because she's driving away industries and investment). No SEZ's. They wonderfully and elegantly got rid of Infosys, TATA, Microsoft and other BIG companies who want the golden mati (soil) of Bengal.
All major international airlines have ceased to operate direct flight from Kolkata.
The state continues the time honored tradition of blaming Central Government for lack of funds and development but splurges happily on a namesake IPL team and celebrities.
Some parts of the state have no Left or any other representation as they stopped the interested candidates from participating in polls. (She's like the goonda or behen of politics in Kolkata)
She has blocked many Central government scemes in her state. So that the common people keeps relying upon her for all development.
Election has become a farce. People are still and with more intensity threatened to cast their votes for Mamata Banerjee. They are forcefully converted after blackmailing and using muscle power, votes looted and what not. But wasn't this already rampant before Didi came in Power? Yes, but Didi is making it worse.
Freedom and right to openly criticize constructively and disagree logically with the CM’s opinion has become a thing for the daring souls. Simply because the CM has a bad reputation of intolerance. So, cartoonists or comic illustrators get jailed.
Taking cases of women harrasment and violence too casually. The Park Street rape incident and several other incidents time and again have brought forward senseless comments from the CM like “The kids did a mistake.”
Overall I would give her a thumbs down in terms of managing the state. She's done good work with the various schemes that she's launched and has also been acknowledged for her work by the UN but she has a dictator like mentality when she's in the ruling majority. She is biased towards a certain section of the population and she is infamous for keeping investments at bay. I am not sure with a PM like her would we have any more investments coming into the country because of her history.
I've tried to keep this post as unbiased as possible but feel free to post your comments and add your inputs. As always I would once again like to say that I do not belong to any political party or endorse one. I am not paid by any political party's IT cell and these are just my views. A common man expressing his common views.
As I end this third post, I would like to remind people that your vote counts and your vote matters. When you head out to vote, please vote for the right candidate, please vote for a candidate with a clean image, please vote for someone who talks development and can do development. Voting based on Emotions, Religion, Region, Caste and language isn't going to yield anything. Don't fall into their false propaganda, false gifts and false promises because if you do and these people happen to win then you will lose. Don't vote for a candidate who belongs to your favourite PM candidate's party just because you want that person to be the PM. If the person from other party is good and can bring about a change then vote for that person since a PM is not going to come to you and solve your local issues.
If you think none of the candidates in your area are good then press NOTA (None of the Above). Development should be the sole goal when we head out to vote.
Let's believe in our constitution and believe that we can bring about a change.
Please exercise your right to vote.
Fourth post on Mr. Nitin Gadkari. Coming soon..
(I know he is not a PM candidate but you may never know the reality of coalition politics)
